My direct involvement with hockey began in the early 1970's when my brother, Brian, asked on behalf of his hockey coach, Ken Weech, if I would come out and give his team some tips. At that point I realized that if my brother's team needed help so did others. Afterwards I demonstrated my ideas on power skating at the Bruce MacGregor Hockey School. Bruce encouraged me to continue on with my interest in hockey.
During my last year of university I had space for an option and could fill it with yet another psychology course or a hockey course. Encouragement from Golden Bear hockey coach Leon Abbott sealed my fate - I signed up for the hockey course. Later Coach Abbott asked if I was interested in teaching some classes. Thinking that he meant while he was on the road, I figured, hey - no problem I can cover a couple of classes for him. My answer was "Sure".
I remember him saying that I could only do it on the condition that I pull my weight the same as a man and that I realize I will always have to be better than any man on the ice. As it turned out, Coach Abbott wanted me to work at the hockey school as a hockey instructor. In 1976 I turned professional to teach hockey and developed my own power skating program.
The first junior team I worked with was the Portland Winter Hawks and followed by the first professional team the Edmonton Oilers. Since that time I have had the honor of working with countless players, teams, organizations and schools throughout the world.
